They are even more demanding about the quality than we are! We partner with growers that understand the importance of genetic purity, identifying and correcting genetic drift and continuing to select for the best possible qualities in the plants that have made them heirlooms to begin with. Please check back often, as we update the website frequently with new items and information. We want to share our knowlege with you, and the knowledge that others have shared with us. Please join us! We are constantly striving to re-introduce "new" heirlooms, many that have disappeared from the market. If you know of a variety, please let us know!WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE! We are Cindy and Stephen Scott, along with Allan and Eileen Davis, owners of Terroir Seeds LLC and the home of Underwood Gardens, known for a fine selection of heirloom, organic and rare seeds. The concepts of Terroir and Seeds are not new ones, but rather has been growing and gaining ground in the past several years. Terroir in its most basic translation is “soil”. The wine community has been using the term for quite some time, mostly in its broader translation of “taste of place” or “sense of place”. We are simply combining the broader translation with the concept of heirloom and open-pollinated seeds to arrive at the thought of using the best of both worlds- the heirloom seeds that have been saved and selected for flavor, hardiness and adaptability with the taste of the soil where the seeds are grown- the sense of place. Our goals are to incorporate the best seeds with the best soil possible to achieve outstanding results in flavor, taste and nutrition that is truly unique to your garden!Cindy has her degree in greenhouse management, and has been the resident grower of the family for a long time. She has been collecting articles on soils, seed saving and general growing for over 10 years. Over the course of working for a nonprofit natural history center for over 6 years, she has gained many skills and talents that will be put to good use here! She developed a Grow Native! Plant Sale and Educational Festival that educates gardeners in the Central Arizona Highlands. Stephen has a business background, from management of a nationally known rental car agency to warranty administrator for a local car dealership. He is an acknowledged chili-head who loves the hotter side of things and loves to cook. The appeal of the garden and growing is to supply the freshest ingredients for the meals! He has a large interest in self sustainability - being able to do and produce most of what one needs. We have built a greenhouse from recycled materials that will provide a source of year round produce as well as serve as the starting beds for the plants that will be grown in the garden and for seed.We are bringing new changes to Underwood Gardens, including this new website. We do not have all the bells and whistles and pretty photos yet, but we strive to bring you the best selection of seeds! Our goal is to expand our website during 2009 with more photos and background information for many of our selections. Also, it will be more customer-friendly and as always, a secure location to shop on-line. If you want to follow our new blog at www.terroirseeds.net you can learn more about our growing and the unique world of heirloom seeds. We want to open a conversation with our customers, as this is a unique and exciting market and business. Please leave comments on the blog, send them to us on the website, or just call us and let us know your thoughts- 888-878-5247.
